Dr. Ismael Coronado

Biomineralization Web Author PhdDr. Ismael Coronado studied a B. Sc. in Geology, a M. Sc. in Paleontology at the Complutense University of Madrid and obtained his PhD (Geology and Geological Engineering) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sergio Rodríguez. His thesis with title “On biomineralization of Carboniferous auloporid corals” was supported by a fellowship of the Complutense University of Madrid. In 2014, he was awarded with the International Award in Paleontology Research “Paleonturologia 14” by the Fundación Conjunto Paleontológico de Teruel-Dinópolis. Currently he works as postdoct in the Paleobiology Institute of Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), within the project “Assessment of organics in the control of crystallographic properties in otoliths”.

He is specialist in several spectroscopy and microscopy techniques usually applied in the characterization of biominerals. As results of his research and collaborations, has acquired a broad understanding on biomineralization, crystallography and geochemistry of fossils and recent marine calcium carbonate organisms (mainly cnidarians) and their modification during diagenesis. The current research lines are focused in the study of structure, chemical composition and crystallography of biominerals, comparing recent and fossil organisms to shed light on current problems and their analogy in the fossil record. At present, he collaborates with different research groups both national and international in several topics, from the evolution of biomineralization in cnidarians, molluscs and crustaceans to the study of crystallographic and geochemical properties of Recent corals derived from stressful marine environments.
